Ten of the best song lyrics of all time (according to me)

September 3, 2009

  • ‘Hey ho, let’s go’ – The Ramones ‘Blitzkrieg Bop’

What a way to start a song. What a way to start an album. What a way to start a career. One of the most recognised song lyrics of all time; I can’t even begin to explain the importance of this lyric. This is to lyrics what ‘Smoke on the Water’ is to guitar riffs.

  • ‘Thanks for the support, asshole’ – Eminem ‘My Name Is’

Basically because I say this all the time. Eminem has had a surprising influence on the teenagers of today’s speech. I’ll never forget my entire class having a competition on who knew all the words to ‘Without Me’. Oh, and Eminem got me saying ‘dude’ thanks to D12 ‘My Band’.

  • ‘God save the queen, the fascist regime’ – The Sex Pistols ‘God Save the Queen’

This song is controversial, it’s exciting, it’s influential and it’s so very punk. And this is the line everyone remembers. Plus it’s resenting a monarchy. What can I say? I’m not big on royal families and peasants. Aren’t royals kind of outdated?

  • ‘And I, leave behind, this hurricane of fucking lies’ – Green Day ‘Jesus of Suburbia

This entire song is full of lyrical gems. I considered ‘I’m the son of rage and love, the Jesus of Suburbia’ as a separate number on this list. This is one of my favourite lines from the song. And I think ‘hurricane of fucking lies’ can describe how a lot of people feel.

  • ‘Fuck you, for existing in the first place’ Ani Difranco ‘Untouchable Face’

This is quite possibly the best feminist lyric ever. And the way she sings it is so pure and raw. It doesn’t get much better than that.

  • ‘Do you ever lock yourself in your room? With the radio on turned up so loud that no one hears you screaming’ – Simple Plan ‘Welcome To My Life’

I’ve always wondered if it’s possible to actually do that. I can scream pretty damn loud when given half a chance.

  • ‘Suicidal education’ – The Living End ‘Wake Up’

Most people feel their education is suicidal. And everyone needs to be educated in teenage suicide. So yeah, that’s why.

  • ‘Are you gonna be my girl?’ – Jet ‘Are you gonna be my girl?

I love the way Nic Cester can make the word ‘girl’ sound as if it’s about 3 syllables. And there’s something so very raw and awesome about Jet and this song.

  • ‘She must be fucking freezing, scantily clad beneath the clear night sky’ – The Arctic Monkeys ‘When the Sun Goes Down’

Female fashion is weird. Enough said.

  •  ‘Call me a bitch ‘cause I speak what’s on my mind, guess it’s easier for you to swallow if I sat and smiled’ – Christina Aguilera ‘Can’t Hold Us Down’

This song deals very well with the double standards that still exist between men and women. This line is a prime example of that. It’s a surprisingly intelligent song when you consider the usual fashion choices of both Lil Kim and Christina.
