Do you want fries with that?

August 4, 2009

Today I did the thing I said I never would again. I went to McDonalds for lunch. I was starving and there was simply nothing else so I ran into the yellow arches for fries and a burger. I knew I should have had more for breakfast.

Now before you start drawing your own conclusions, I do not boycott McDonalds for diet reasons. I am not the sort of person who diets, I just don’t believe in it. To me, happiness is a cheesecake. Everyone else can have their carrot sticks and celery. The reason I don’t go to places like McDonalds is simple. I don’t do franchises. I hate franchises. When I was in America, everything was a franchise. Everything. The only place you could buy coffee was Starbucks, dinner was always at a chain restaurant…Now there’s nothing wrong with franchises, I would just like to be able to make the choice of going to one or going somewhere else. But if everything is a franchise, you don’t get to make that choice. You can’t buy coffee in cute little chipped mugs in a hideaway cafe, you can’t have dinner at the local thai restaurant. There is no ‘local’ restaurants. The only people who get your money are the already wealthy corporations. And the only way to make sure this doesn’t happen in Australia (well, Melbourne, it’s already in say, the Gold Coast) is not to go to franchises. If they’re not making heaps of money, they won’t survive. That way we’ll still have the corner pizza shop. So I won’t go to any of the following places: Sushi Sushi, Subway, Pizza Hut, McDonalds…until now. Yep, if the only choice is soon those big yellow arches, I’ll be to blame. Well, me and every other person that’s gone there in the last year.
