I’m not a shoe person. I own a pair of pretty much destroyed black Chuck Taylors, 3 pairs of plain flats (2 plain black, one with a blue tarten pattern) and about ten pairs of thongs in varying colours because Australians always own at least ten pairs of thongs (flip-flops). Note none of those have even the slightest heel.

There are two main reasons I don’t wear heels. The first is that they are painful. They leave feet blistered and calloused and basically unpleasent looking. Feet may look hot in the shoes but once the shoes come off they are just disgusting. When I went through a very short phase wearing heels I couldn’t walk following the days I wore them and would spend hours soaking and massaging feet in the vain hope the pain would go away. My opinion on pain is that if something hurts, it’s not natural. It’s not supposed to happen. Which is why the pain from high heels eventually causes disfigured and, oh yeah, ugly feet. The other reason is that I can’t actuall walk properly in high heels. I’m no Carrie Bradshaw. Instead I’m clumsy and uncoordinated. I manage to trip over imaginary objects in flats so heels just turn me into a walking disaster. I know I’m not the only person who has this problem because I’ve recieved at least ten bruises or cuts from stilletto heels in the last year. In fact a very common club/pub reason for female hospitalization is unintentional high heel stabbing. Sky-high heels and alcohol do not mix. If people are stumbling around on others feet it’s bad enough but when you throw a metal spike into the mix it’s just painful.

Basically what I’m saying is that high heels equal pain. Yeah yeah no pain no gain, beauty is pain, blah blah blah. In this case I just can’t accept that the ends justifies the means. I hate high heels. You’ll never find any in my wardrobe.

Oh, and for the record, I’m actually quite short.

Green Day because they are basically just brilliant. After seeing their out-of-control Melbourne concert I think I love them even more than before. Billie Joe just may be the coolest guy alive…let’s face it anyone who can write a song that goes for 9 minutes and never lets up (Jesus of Suburbia) is a hero and a genius.

Anyway, I’m going on holiday for a couple of weeks. When I come back I’m either going to revamp this blog or kill it.

We’ll see.

One of them is horrendous bushfires. Since most Melburnians have been counting down the days until ‘fire season’ (no, it’s not summer anymore) all year I won’t go into that.

I am talking about public transport. As soon as the mercury hits 30 (okay to be fair public transport is almost as bag in optimum 20-degree weather) the trains cease to show up. I once waited an hour for a train at Flinders St in January. Yeah, I could walk home faster than that. They give us all this crap about tracks expanding in the heat and how they don’t have equipment to run trains in hot weather. Well here’s a newsflash: it gets hot in Melbourne. If all buisnesses melted at 30 they wouldn’t exist. Never mind the fact that the government and public service providers have had decades to fix this problem, they haven’t. And every year they roll out the same excuses. I have caught at least 20 trains in the last fortnight and they were all delayed. I’d bloody better get compensation this month.

So here’s my question for Brumby/Kosky and co: if Mussolini could get the trains to run on time, why can’t you?

Well, now I realise that at least they are prepared for failure. They are used to it. And when the going gets tough, at least they know how to study. Me? Having never had to, I don’t really know how. I always thought I was lucky but now I wonder if maybe it’s actually a curse in disguise…

On the other hand I always wing my exams and everything works out fine so maybe they will this time too and I’m just overeacting. Again. Or I could be studying s=instead of blogging. Hmmmmm….

My lovely, hopeless, clueless friend is at it again.

She meets a guy in a club. She hooks up with said guy. She really really likes the guy because ‘he’s not like other guys…I mean we were holding hands and stuff. It wasn’t just physical. I know we had a real connection’. She gives (forces) her number on him. He doesn’t call or text.

She whines and complains and cries because she felt she ‘could really fall in love with him’.

Then she does the unthinkable.

She calls his work pretending to be a uni friend to get his number. She doesn’t get it that way but somehow, by badgering mutual friends, does get his number. She calls. She texts. Multiple multiple times.

She wonders why he doesn’t answer.

Just face it: he’s just not that into you!

Some of the music that tops the charts (think pitbulls ‘i know you want me’ ) are just plain wrong (in the sexist sense) on their own, but usually it’s the accompanying video clip that does most of the damage. Take the clip for dizzee rascal’s ‘holiday’ where the camera spends most of the time following around a chick’s bikini-clad arse. Or akon/david guetta’s ‘sexy bitch’ where we get to see a bunch of women gyrating around a pool.

What does this tell us about the position of women in society today? Nothing has changed. All of those things our mothers fought for don’t exist. Women aren’t respected, they are still treated as sex objects.

It also shows we can’t respec ourselves. I have to cringe at 12 and 13 year old girls who listen and dance to this kind of music. In their ears it’s innocent and they don’t realise what they are supporting but they are supporting it. And by listening to this music all they do is encourage more of this garbage to be released and less female power.

I had to cringe reading an interview with akon about ‘sexy bitch’ as a song and how the lyrics aren’t supposed to be disrespectful but that’s just what sexy is…okay. I can accept the lyrics. I can’t respect videos of girls in bikinis way too small to wear in the real world rolling around in popcorn. That is disrespectful there is really no other way in can be taken.

What happened to feminism? What happened to girl power? Sure sex sells but why is it female sex? Maybe Brit and Beyonce can start releasing videos of guys in tiny speedos rolling around in oil. Tell me there isn;’t a market for that.

Basically any kind of cocktail because the sunny days have finally arrived, but especially Long Island Iced Tea because it’s wickedly alcoholic and just screams party time. Lazy days by the pool with friends having a blast and going just a little bit crazy. Refreshing drinks and long novels. I love summer (and late spring).
